psycho pigs uxb remake
amiga, amstrad, games, retro May 29th, 2009For some inexplicable reason I’ve always had a soft spot for U.S. Gold’s 8-bit, action packed game Psycho Pigs UXB. A spot so soft, in fact, that I even produced my own reimagined and much extended version for the Amiga, Turbo Tomato! I was therefore happy (as a pig in …) to learn that a new remake of Psycho Pigs UXB is under way over at Tardis Remakes.
A remake itself (of the Jaleco arcade game Butasan), Psycho Pigs UXB’s fast and frenetic gameplay casts the player as a (presumably psychotic) pig who must do battle with other, similarly unhinged porkers by throwing time bombs at them to kill ‘em all in the explosions, and so progress through the levels. New enemies, power-ups and a bonus round are uncovered along the way to keep you interested.
I’ve often toyed with the idea of remaking Turbo Tomato! for the current generation of gamers, but so far it’s remained just an idea. Should I ever start down that road I think I’ll have some stiff competition from this new game from Tardis. It’s still at an early stage, but the first screenshots look promising.
I’m only aware of one other remake of Pigs, Squealer TNT by Piptol Productions, though I can always play the original Butasan on MAME. I’d still love to hear of any others!
I’ll be keeping an eye on this one from Tardis. I’m watching you, little piggy.
