alien breed 3d: qbreed

, , , November 7th, 2010

Last year I wrote a little about Alien Breed 3D, one of my favourite games on the Amiga and indeed ever. In that post mentioned that I’d begun (and then abandoned) a project to reverse engineer the AB3D level structure and recreate the levels in the Quake 1 engine. This was known as QBreed.

QBreed Level 1

QBreed never got much beyond a partial recreation of level 1 of AB3D, but I’ve had a few (really, as many as that) requests to release the conversion tools and utilities I created anyway. So here they are.

Download qbreed.zip (25Mb)

This is a simple archive of the development directory that I rescued from my Amiga’s hard drive. Source code (SAS/C), makefiles, data files and binaries are all included. The files I created are hereby placed in the public domain, so feel free to do what you want with them.

Unfortunately, it’s probably been over ten years since I last looked at this code, so I know as much about it as you do. What I’m saying is, don’t ask as I won’t know. You’re basically on your own with it.

But if you do (somehow) manage to push this project further, I’d love to hear about it!

Thanks for putting it in the public domain, I shall enjoy looking through the code. Who knows, I may get time to do something interesting with it…
