a new amstrad cpc r-type

, , January 15th, 2011

Octoate reports on a new Amstrad CPC remake of Irem’s classic arcade shooter, R-Type.

The original Amstrad CPC version was a rushed port of the (well received) Spectrum version and as a result was not all it could have been on the CPC’s more powerful hardware. The new remake, developed by team Easter Egg, began life with the same Spectrum code, but now 80% of it has been rewritten specifically for the CPC. Graphics, sounds and music have all also been greatly improved.

Easter Egg member Xyphoe has a made a preview video available. Check it out below.

Blast off and strike the evil Bydo Empire, this time in 16 colours!

R-Type is also now available on iPhone.

A massive improvement on the original, and nice to see that CPC development is alive and well. The scrolling still sucks though.

16K of screen memory meant scrolling was never easy on the CPC.

I have been trying to find the completed version for a while now, any new updates?
