a mention in the times
facebook, featured, geek, life, social, web April 22nd, 2009I was reading an article on how Google is now including Google Profile matches in search results and, being an experimental sort, decided to try it for myself by searching for my own name.
See? It works. Great.
Googling myself is something I do from time to time and, from time to time, it turns up a surprise. This time, the surprise turned up was that one of the search results was a link to a Times Online article that mentions my earlier post, “25 Random Things About Me”.
The article looks at the “25 random things confession craze” that swept Facebook and other social sites a few months ago and features excerpts from the confessions of a few notable, high profile public figures that took part. Tom Harris, Labour MP for Glasgow South, admits being a Bucks Fizz fan. John Prescott, another MP and former deputy Labour leader, has been to see Billy Elliott six times and it made him cry.
And then there’s also little me. My mention is small, barely a paragraph, but it’s there. I’ve no idea how my post in particular caught the journalist’s attention as it’s well down in the many search results for “25 things about me” and variations thereof. I can only guess that the researchers had to read a lot of “25 things…” posts and it was the mention of my considering a career change to hitman that swung the vote for me.

Now, if only they’d linked back…
